New Cell Phone Policy:
1. Storage During School Hours:
If a student brings a cell phone to school, it must be kept in their locker and remain off or on silent mode throughout the school day. This policy is designed to help students focus on their studies and engage with their peers without the distractions that cell phones can bring.
2. Enforcement of Policy:
If a student is found with or using their cell phone in any manner (calling, texting, or otherwise) outside of the designated times, the phone will be confiscated and taken to the building administrator. Parents will be notified, and the phone will be returned to a parent or guardian.
3. Accommodations:
We understand that some students utilize their cell phones for medical purposes, such as blood sugar tracking. Accommodations will be made as necessary but must be part of the student's medical plan.
Why This Policy?
Research shows a direct correlation between school cell phone policies and improved student test scores, reinforcing the importance of minimizing distractions during school hours. Additionally, studies have highlighted the negative effects of cell phones on mental health, behavior, and overall student well-being. In light of these findings, many Oregon schools are implementing similar policies.
Please know that this decision was not made lightly. While we are just now implementing these changes, conversations surrounding student cell phone use and its impacts have been taking place for years.
We also recognize that these changes may not significantly affect some students, as many do not have cell service in our building. However, we believe these measures are essential to maintaining a productive learning environment.
Communication During Emergencies:
In case of emergencies, we encourage parents to contact our school office, where staff can quickly connect with your child. If you need to communicate with your student during the day, please call the office as well.
Additionally, please be assured that our district has a robust emergency alert system in place to notify parents in the event of a school-wide emergency.
We appreciate your support and cooperation in reinforcing these expectations with your child. Thank you for your understanding and partnership as we work together to provide the best educational experience for our students.
